US Lawmakers Applaud 50 Prominent US Sikhs

Washington, DC – More than a dozen American lawmakers applauded as 250 plus Sikh women and men from all over the United States gathered at an event, organized by the Sikh Council On Religion and Education(SCORE), to mark the 550th birth-anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, and to honor 50 prominent Sikhs in USA.

A book “Prominent Sikhs of USA”, highlighting the contributions of 50 Sikhs, was released. The author of this book, Prabhleen Singh from Punjabi University, Patiala, presented the book to each of the US Representatives at the event held in Rayburn Foyer, Capitol Hill, Washington DC.

Congressional leaders who came to show their support for the community were Ami Bera, Greg Stanton, Grace Meng, John Garamendi, Haley Stevens, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, Steve Cohen, Jim Costa, Peter King, Tom Suozzi, Jerry McNerney, Judy Chu, Carolyn Maloney and former Congressman Joe Crowley. One by one they came and took turns to express their solidarity with the Sikh community.

Gurinder Pal Singh, Vice President Sikh Gurdwara in San Jose told IAT, “Sikhs have however rarely written their own history. They have been busy creating it. This book is first step towards filling this gap.”

Pushpinder Kaur, Principal of Guru Nanak Khalsa School, San Jose, one of the 50 prominent Sikhs mentioned in the book said, “I have been involved in seva (service) activities for more than 30 years. I didn’t realize that my efforts and contributions were appreciated so much that I would be nominated as one of the 50 Most Prominent Sikhs of USA.”
