Mme.Minister,
We appreciate the convening of this debate by the delegation of Mozambique. We thank our briefers, Executive Director of UN Women S. Bahous, President of ICRC M. Spoljaric Egger, and AU Special Representative for Women, Peace, and Security B. Diop, as well as Ms. Leymah Gbowee.
This discussion reiterates the unfading relevance of UNSC resolution 1325. Regular debates by the Security Council on WPS agenda make it possible for us to assess the results achieved and set out targets for further improvement of the role and input of women in conflict prevention and settlement, post-conflict recovery, and also to enhance measures for protection of women in situations of armed conflict.
Prerogatives of the Security Council that are outlined in the Charter of the United Nations define the specifics of UNSC’s contribution to women’s agenda. We believe we should avoid duplication of efforts of different bodies of the Organization. Therefore measures that we take need to embed naturally in the efforts of the General Assembly, Human Rights Council, Commission on the Status of Women, and the Peacebuilding Commission.
Security Council must remain focused on efforts to prevent and eradicate violence against civilians in situations of armed conflicts. Unfortunately, despite extensive efforts that are being made, women still are falling victim to hostilities.
Protracted and simmering conflicts create a whole extra layer of problems. Increased attention must be paid to the issues relating to the development of women, eradication of poverty, ensuring access of women to education in countries that are exposed to armed conflicts.
Family is a special value, and ensuring protection of families is a major priority.
Mme.President,
We are committed to constructive cooperation with all interested states in order to promote women’s agenda in the Security Council harmoniously. October 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of resolution 1325. We need to see it in from the positions of solidarity and while demonstrating meaningful achievements and unity of the Council.
Thank you.
