Today marks two years since Burma’s military regime wrested power away from the elected government, denying the people their voice and cutting short the country’s democratic progress. For two years, we have seen the repercussions of that coup – a dire humanitarian crisis leading to thousands killed or detained, over 1.5 million displaced, and instability in Burma’s neighboring countries. This is not what the people of Burma want or deserve.
That is why, through UN Security Council Resolution 2669, the international community demands an end to the horrific violence, the release of all those arbitrarily detained, unhindered access for humanitarian aid, and respect for human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of Burma.
More must be done. The Security Council must support implementation of ASEAN’s Five Point Consensus, promote accountability for the atrocities and abuses committed by Burma’s military regime, and oppose any future attempts by the military to unjustly consolidate control. The United States will continue to promote peace and a return to democracy in Burma through our work with members of the Security Council, other Member States, and regional partners, including ASEAN.
