Houston, Texas – The curtain came down on the tenth edition of the PanIIT Global Conference on Sunday, December 8 after three days packed with intensive networking, the renewing of old ties, and lively entertainment, all impeccably organized under the able leadership of the conference committee chaired by Witty Bindra, with Pratish Kanani as vice chair.

Thanking his team of close to 100 volunteers who had worked tirelessly for the past 18 months, Bindra said the goal of the conference was, “To inspire young folks to think and work together to make this world a better place to live. The fact is that by 2045, the world’s population is expected to grow to about 9 billion people, from about 7 billion today, and we should be able to provide 50% more food, 30% more water, and 50% more energy than it consumes today.”

Umang Gupta, the chairman of PanIIT Global, said, “I have been coming for more than 10 years to these PanIIT conferences and I can tell you this is one of the best organized conferences that I have come to know. I congratulate the entire volunteer team organizers, all of them out together.”

Highlighting the importance of giving back not only to the alma mater but also to the country, Gupta continued, “And also give back to our nations…whether it is back in India, the nation we come from or to America the nation we are in. And this event is perfect example of how we as IITians are coming together in giving back. So congratulations. Thank you.”

Bindra’s strategy, marketing and PR committee head, Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, said the event had succeeded in its mission of “giving back to the greater humanity and leaving a tangible mark for the future.” “We hoped to achieve that through the conference. Bringing together over 1,500 engineers, technologists and scientists, the conference featured an elite list of speakers, panelists and discussions focused on identifying and developing innovative solutions to an ambitious global challenge,” Chatterjee added.

Roy DeSilva, the stalwart representing the IIT Kharagpur campus, explained the different roles played by campus organizations and PanIIT saying that “both campuses on PanIITs coexist in harmony because they serve two different purposes. PanIIT mission is to brand and to provide alumni services. And bring the collective strength of all IITians to bear on these two issues. IIT Kharagpur Foundation mission is to give back to campus so they are absolutely nonoverlapping.”

On a personal note, DeSilva added, “As a President of IIT Kharagpur I am very proud to be able to say that I work hard to give back to the campus and as a member of PanIIT I do my share to meet the mission of providing branding and our alumni services and my message to everyone who is over here, ‘Come work hard but have a good time doing it’.”

Umang Gupta echoed DeSilva, saying, “It reminds our whole conference is structured is all about giving back to ourselves, essentially helping each other through networking and alumni services giving back to our alma maters, the IITs great engineering institutes, the greatest, in fact, I would like to think, on earth.”

Prasad Vemuri, an alumnus from IIT Kharagpur who came from New Jersey, felt a “sense of belonging and in a way a kind of entitlement.” Vemuri told India America Today, “To be part of this wonderful community that is doing a lot, I believe, for the US economy – I am very excited to be a part of this. I am regular at PanIIT. And every time PanIIT is over, I look forward to next PanIIT.”

Making note of the things that make him a part of PanIIT, Vemuri said, “not just network to exchange ideas helps them professionally in a way and also brainstorms on lot of topics related to one’s own world. In general, about what’s happening in the business world.”

An excited local participant, Adil Adi, called the conference, “the meeting of intellectual minds,” adding, “Lot of our customers and friends are here. So we are very appreciative of the PanIIT efforts to make this conference very, very successful. Look forward for the next time again.”

Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and founder of the Ranbir (Ron) and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management at IIT Kharagpur in 2008, aptly called it, “one of the best organized meeting so far.”
