His Excellency delivered a speech in which he stressed the need to move towards enhancing the ability of the international system to maintain international peace and security in accordance with what is stipulated in the United Nations Charter.
His Excellency said: “The increasing challenges facing the international community and the current bloody events require the utmost effectiveness in dealing with and responding to the multilateral system, headed by the Security Council, which is responsible for interacting neutrally and objectively with all issues in accordance with the mandate entrusted to it.”
His Excellency added that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stresses the need to combine the factor of effectiveness on the one hand, and the factor of pluralism and sound representation on the other hand, in any serious effort to reform and complete global governance.
His Excellency reiterated the Kingdom’s emphasis on the importance of intergovernmental negotiations on reforming the multilateral system, noting that they should be through the General Assembly, in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 62/557, which was adopted by consensus.
His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs also pointed to the growing crisis of confidence in the ability of the United Nations and its bodies, especially the Security Council, to carry out their responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and resolving disputes through peaceful means.
His Excellency renewed the Kingdom’s call to reform the Security Council to be more just in representing the current reality, more effective in keeping pace with the transformations and developments of the international community, and more efficient in addressing its common challenges, saying: “The Kingdom is ready to cooperate with the rest of the member states in order to achieve this noble goal.”
