(6 December 2024, 15:00-18:00, Delegates Dining Room, UNHQ)
This very special occasion has been made possible only because of our much-esteemed sister Ranju Batra, whose remarkable vision we honour today. Her outstanding determination has turned a dream into a symbol of unity and shared cultural heritage. Through her efforts, the Diwali Stamp has become a timeless emblem in the United States Postal System that transcends borders, fostering understanding and connection among people of diverse traditions and faiths.
So dear Ranju, please accept our profound gratitude and admiration. Your dedication reminds us that with vision and perseverance, we can all leave an indelible mark on history.
Ranju and Ravi are inseparable and perfectly matched. Ravi is the true cornerstone of this magnificent event. Though spanning just three hours, it reflects countless hours of meticulous planning year after year with a commitment to perfection.
On behalf of Kazakhstan, as a co-sponsor, I most warmly felicitate you all as we celebrate the enduring legacy of the Diwali Stamp Forever.
Ravi is a distinguished US attorney and national figure. With his rich background in law, he has combined his passion for justice and freedom with global diplomacy. He is therefore a steadfast friend of the United Nations, and to every diplomat personally, embodying the spirit of unity and cooperation. Ravi’s dedication and vision continue to enrich, inspire and connect us all, as a blessing in our lives.
So, then what is Diwali? Diwali is a unique festival. Kazakhstan shares in the joy of this celebration, as my nation too, with its more than 100 ethnic/cultural groups and major world religions, cherishes the richness of cultural diversity and the power of dialogue to illuminate pathways toward harmony.
Today, we also pay tribute to the distinguished diplomats honoured with the Power of One Award. Their work at the UN exemplifies the profound truth that a single individual with wisdom and courage can ignite change and shape policies for human betterment. Their steadfast commitment to multilateralism reflects the highest ideals of diplomacy.
Each of them stands to epitomize the human capacity to create a new vision by building bridges in the highest centres of power in New York and Brussels, they have also proved to be true upholders of the UN Charter. I wish them even greater achievement in the service of humanity.
On the other hand, the Power of One also reinforces the human spirit within each of us to constantly strive for the highest and noblest in life, and see our limitless potential for human betterment.
I must acknowledge that I feel privileged in a way – perhaps more than some of you. I have had a deep personal connection to the celebration of Diwali because of the five transformative years I spent in India, immersing myself in its vibrant culture and timeless traditions. For me, Diwali is much more than a festival. It has become a profound experience of light, renewal, and togetherness.
I recall homes in New Delhi illuminated with clay and brass lamps, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and truth over falsehood. The sense of joy and love that filled the air has left a lasting impression on me, resonating deeply the universal values of hope, resilience, and generous giving.
Diwali for me is a metaphor for the enduring power of light, a reminder that even the smallest flame can dispel darkness. Indeed, India’s rich cultural heritage has a message for the world.
To conclude, let the light of this Diwali celebration inspire us all to continue striving for a brighter, more inclusive and prosperous world. A world in which we stand for a common humanity with a shared destiny.
Thank you.
