Washington, DC – The founder of Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), the business school of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur which has completed its Silver Jubilee, welcomed its ranking at 4th place among the business schools in India. The highly respected QS Subject Ranking 2019 for Business & Management Studies mentioned VGSoM offering exceptionally high Citations per Paper and H-index Citations scores.
In a statement to IAT, Vin (Vinod) Gupta cited three reasons for the meteoric rise of VGSoM in the management school arena.
Firstly, Vin credited K L Chopra, then director of IIT Kharagpur saying, “(He) jumped at my offer without bureaucratic roadblocks,” along with Arjun Singh giving matching funds, adding, “Dr. S. D. Sharma, President of India agreed to inaugurate … thanks to his son AD Sharma.”
On his second point, Vin highlighted that, “This program is for students with science and engineering background … with 3-4 year experience … compared to other schools who will take anyone … most without analytical skills.” Thus Vin stressed the importance of analytical skills, saying that without it, “They lack the skills for analytical decision making.”
On his third point, Vin showered praise and gave credit to administration, faculty and students. Giving credit to “IIT Kharagpur directors … the leadership (including) the dean, the students, the faculty,” Vin noted that they, “with meager funds, made sure that the school of management maintained the highest standard.”
In his humble words, Vin said, “I sowed the seeds. They nurtured it to grow it into a beautiful tree.”
VGSoM focuses in several multidisciplinary areas of research and development in the Institute as well as collaborative projects. The 25 faculty members of VGSoM publish on an average 75 papers or case studies annually in peer reviewed international journals on relevant areas of management studies which are widely cited. The School is backed by the interdisciplinary engineering, science and mathematics platforms of IIT Kharagpur which present a unique opportunity to its students to pursue electives in various subjects other than Management. The School is also part of the multi-institutional Postgraduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) offered jointly by IIT Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta.
School of Intellectual Property
On another school, the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL), which is also his brain child and funded by him for his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur, Vin felt the joint efforts worked well.
“Same thing is true for intellectual property law school,” said Vin about the school of intellectual property which is the first of its kind law school to impart legal education with IP specialization within the IIT System bringing synergy among science, technology, management and law. The School offers a Six-Semester,
Three-Year Full-Time residential program leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in Intellectual Property Law approved by the Bar Council of India.
