Silver Spring, Maryland – A select audience braved overcast skies and wet weather to attend the 19th Business Leadership Series at the spacious hall of Jewel of India.

Opening the conference, Norvell V. Coots, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health highlighted the urgent need for qualified nurses at the hospital and his attempts to facilitate some to arrive from as far as Philippines. Later answering a question from the audience, Coots explained, “10,700 babies delivered every year so need nurses.”

Coots was candid in highlighting different health needs of various races like African-American, Asian- American, saying they are all different people when it comes to healthcare. Agreeing that the serious opioid crisis needs to be handled, Coots pointed at the “obligation to address pain also.”

Gail Bassette, Director of MBDA Federal Procurement Center elaborated on her agency working to help other agencies to get connected.

Listing building trust as the first factor, she advised entrepreneurs looking for contracts, “Business landscape has changed and it is all about how can you create something that they need – that they are looking for.”

She further advised “To do the best you can and connect with right people,” and that will get you to the right goals. On the path to be a good entrepreneur, Bassette stressed to keep “focus on your niche area. In the first 30 seconds focus on what you do when you get an opportunity,” she advised, adding, “So they get what they are looking for.”

Subramanian Muniasamy, Chief Technology Officer, Maryland Department of Human Services didn’t mince words and cautioned aspiring contractors, “You need God’s Grace to win a contract but in delivering even God can’t help.”

Crediting Maryland Governor Larry Hogan for facilitating the procurement process, Muniasamy noted that his organization is trying to make it happen that all those systems talk to each other, as today there are multiple systems and people have to fill forms in different places. Muniasamy advised entrepreneurs, “Business is a business and there are no friends or enemies.”

Keerthi Swamy, Co-Founder and VP of Beltsville Industries Group introduced the speakers as her Secretary of US-India SME Council (the organizer of the event), while Elisha Pulivarti, President and Co-Founder of the organization thanked all for attending. Prominent among the attendees were Monika Gangadi, EastCoast Metals; Padmalatha Ravi, Smartech Systems; Ashok Kapur, Hawkeye Medical; Murali Pathy, Aquil Systems; Niranjan Adhikari, Adhikari Law firm; Anthony Irudhayanathan, Zillion Technologies; and Joseph Wanene, National Life Group.

The SME Council also presented Charanjiv S. Gadh, CEO, Lumen Solutions with Outstanding Technology Leadership Award for his leadership and support to the US India SME Council.
