Celebration of India’s 73rd Independence Day at the Embassy Residence

Washington, DC – India’s 73rd Independence Day was celebrated in Washington DC with a flag-hoisting ceremony on August 15, 2019 at the Residence of the Indian Ambassador to the United States.

Ambassador Harsh V Shringla hoisted the Indian National Flag, Tricolor, followed by singing of the Indian National Anthem.

Ambassador Shringla also read out the address of President of India to the nation, and addressed the gathering. This was followed by a brief cultural program involving rendition of patriotic songs by the children of Gandharva School of Music.

This year, the Festival of Rakshabandhan coincided with the Indian Independence Day. To mark the occasion, kids from the community tied Rakhis on Ambassador Shringla.

For the first time, the event was made open to the public which saw a tremendous turnout of more than 500 members of the Indian American community.

Gandhi Exhibition

In addition, as part of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, an exhibition on his life and messages was organized at the Mahatma Gandhi Park in front of the Chancery building. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Gandhi Memorial Center, drew hundreds of visitors, including large scale participation from the Indian American community. A well known local band called Baraat Brass played popular patriotic songs.
