Brazil chaired the United Nations Security Council meeting on the conflict in Ukraine

Ambassador Sérgio França Danese, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of October, chaired the Security Council meeting on maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine.

The emergency meeting was called at the request of Albania, Ecuador, the United States, France, Japan, Malta, the United Kingdom and Switzerland to discuss the attacks in the Kharkiv region, which killed at least 52 people last week.

By expressing solidarity with the families of the victims, Brazil reiterated its appeal to all parties to respect international humanitarian law and the fundamental principles of distinction between combatants and civilians.

Brazil reiterated its call for the cessation of hostilities. The path of diplomatic negotiation is the only one that will lead to a just and lasting peace, in line with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and taking into account the legitimate security concerns of all.

Brazil reaffirms its respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states and its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes.
